Public Education Outreach and Participation funding was recently expanded by Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) to include a “Statewide Initiatives” category.  In creating the Statewide Initiatives category, the Water Plan serves as the main driver of the priorities noted in the PEPO Grant Criteria and Guidelines. Because the Water Plan outlines broad priorities, the PEPO workgroup along with CWCB have together outlined funding priorities for the Statewide Initiatives fund to help spur applicant ideas and guide program development.

Twenty-nine projects distributed across the state have been selected to receive financial and technical support with funding CAWA obtained from the Colorado Water Conservation Board and private donors. The drought resilience program was designed to provide seed funding to support early-stage projects with the potential to reduce water use, improve water management, and/or demonstrate drought resilience and adaptation. The end-goal is to identify projects that can be scaled up to a level that can keep Colorado agriculture as healthy and productive as possible under the hotter, drier conditions that have become more common.

This years conference “Snows, Flows, and Drought: Managing for Western Water Resilience” will be held June 1st and 2nd at Allbright Auditorium, Colorado Mountain College, Steamboat Springs CO.  This is a free event put on by Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, CMC, Center of Western Weather and Water Extremes, Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation.    More Information to come closer to the event.

STRATEGIES FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE BASIN WATER NEEDS

The Yampa White Green Basin Roundtable (YWG BRT) process offers local communities the opportunity to have a strong voice in how water will be managed now and in the future. This unique grassroots process does not exist in other states where water planning is more commonly conducted at the state agency level.

AGRICULTURE

While it is common for agricultural areas in Colorado to be water-short, agricultural shortages represent a real need and opportunity for improvement. In addition, the YWG Basin is the only basin in the State projecting the addition of up to 14,805 irrigated acres.

MUNICIPAL & INDUSTRIAL

As the YWG Basin continues to grow, its M&I water needs must be identified and addressed. We reiterate that the later development of the YWG Basin and the junior status of its water rights portfolio among Colorado River Basin tributaries is of concern.

NON-CONSUMPTIVE

Environmental and recreational water uses are critical to the economy and way of life in the YWG Basin. The YWG BRT recognizes the economic value of the relatively natural flow regimes of the Yampa and White river systems.

Your Water Table Video Series

The Yampa-White-Green Basin Roundtable help fund a six-episode video series that covers the rivers in the basin and topics that are important to the roundtable.  Topics include: the natural hydrograph, municipal and industrial water use, storage, agriculture, recreation and wildlife, White River.

The Governor announced this event at Colorado Water Congress and we have been busy putting together a plan. It has been over a decade since the last Drought Summit CWCB hosted in 2012. This event will focus on climate data, drought lessons learned and projects that are working to mitigate the impacts of drought and implement the Colorado Water Plan.  The two-day event will be held on May 31 and June 1 at History Colorado in Denver.

WECO Annual River Basin Tour Information

The last C-9 summit was held in 2019. In keeping with actions in the Water Plan (e.g. Action 4.2) to support the impact of roundtables and to create greater alignment between the Board, IBCC and roundtables, the 2023 C-9 Summit will serve to support cross-basin collaboration. At the February IBCC meeting, the IBCC PEPO working group (thanks to Lisa Darling and Ken Brenner) agreed to help draft a roundtable-informed agenda.
